whether we like it or not, fall is upon us. here in kc, there’s no shortage of events to take us through to the holidays. from labor day to halloween, here are some of the best things to do this fall in and around kansas city.
this labor day weekend, take the family out to crown center for irish fest. a three-day event, irish fest celebrates celtic heritage with traditional irish food, dance, drink and music. there’s plenty for the young lads and lassies too, from face painting to stage activities. peruse a wide variety of vendors too, from irish pottery and food to books about irish heritage and genealogy. tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. sept 3-5.
on september 18, head out to the plaza for waterfire, a “unique, multi-sensory experience of music, fire and water.” boats travel up and down brush creek, igniting wood sculptures that float along the creek. in addition, enjoy musical performances by quixotic fusion and others. admission is free and the event begins at dusk.
haunted houses abound in the west bottoms. two of most famous, the edge of hell and the beast, are open from early september through november. this writer has never been, but as far as she can tell, they’re terrifying!
about an hour south of kc proper is the louisburg cider mill. in addition to the cider mill, lcm is home to a pumpkin patch, hay rides and a corn maze. you must try their doughnuts as well: crispy, sugary perfection. they are open monday through saturday 8-6 and sunday 10-6, though on sept 25 & 26 and oct. 2 & 3, head out there for 2010 ciderfest.
speaking of apples and cider, head north to weston missouri, for applefest on october 2nd or 3rd. enjoy vendors from old town missouri, a parade and live music and entertainment.
a kansas city fall wouldn’t be the same without the plaza lighting. thanksgiving night, take the family down to the plaza for the lighting. it doesn’t matter where you stand, you’ll be surrounded by people and lights. many stores and restaurants are open, so if it’s as cold as last year, you’ll be able to buy a coffee from any of the local shops. the lighting usually happens around 8pm, admission is free and dogs are welcome.
