whales at sunset. it sounds like a book title. but that was what my night was on tuesday night.
we’d had crab night, and the guests were out in the lounge listening to a talk. we were polishing silver and stowing dishes when the boat slowed. this indicates that we’ve seen something of interest – bears, whales, wolves, etc – and we’ll usually wait to hear from a deck or mate what it is. turns out, humpback whales on the port side. we all clambered to the window and then hurried to the bow. best part is, they were lunge feeding, which we haven’t seen yet this season. it was immensely exciting.

turns out, whales at sunset happen often. the next evening, we cleared the dining room with more whales.
the following night, it was bears. four bears, all wandering down the rocky beach at leisure.
