Travel teaches you all sorts of life lessons. Fellow nomads come into your life for a hot minute to teach you something, and sometimes they stay and other times they go. I’ve learned a lot about myself while travelling but I have also learned a lot about life. Life is messy, complicated, and weird sometimes. Its also beautiful and fun. Some of these are silly things that we all know already, others are more obscure. Some I had to learn the hard way and others came to me via people I met. Here are 32 life lessons that travel has taught me, in no particular order.

Shit happens. It’s how you respond to it that defines the situation.
You can be anything you want to be. Or anyone. Redefine yourself if you want.
Sunsets are not the same in any one place. Take time to see these; they really are special.
Sometimes, sunrise is the best time of day. I always think that sunrise means a new slate, clean and ready for whatever the day wants to draw on it.
A cup of tea can fix anything. A glass of wine is better.
If you can’t carry all of your stuff in one trip, you have too much stuff.
A smile means the same thing in every language.
Never leave the house without a camera, even if its just your phone.
Learning to say “hello” and “thank you” in a different language can open doors you didn’t know were there.
Never resist the urge to stop and look around.
Look up. Sometimes that is the best view.
Appreciate the street art. Its sometimes far better than a museum and its always free.
Keep a journal. Even if it’s just bullet points. Writing down even just the minor things will bring back memories when you read it later.
Never underestimate the power of a good nap.
You won’t like everyone you meet, but you should be nice to everyone you meet.
If you don’t like where you are, then leave. There is always a way out.
Go off the beaten path.
Even if its once a month, or once every six months, send a note to people at home. They still care about you even if they can’t see you.
Be cautious, but not too cautious. Don’t let fear of something stand in the way of an amazing opportunity.
Sometimes you have to take that big leap of faith. If you land in the water, swim.
Invest in a good pair of shoes. Two good pairs, even: one hiking, one casual sandal. Your feet will thank you.
Respect local laws.
Respect local customs.
Talk to other travellers. Some are tedious, others are fun, but they will all teach you something new.
Always jump in the lake/ocean/river (if safe)
Accept that cup of tea; you will likely get a good story out of it.
When looking for food in an unfamiliar place, follow the crowds. Never eat at a street cart that doesn’t have a line of people at the local meal hour.
Take photos, but don’t forget to put the camera down and look around.
Try everything at least once. Twice if you aren’t sure.
Appreciate the rainy days. Consider them a rest day and catch up on your reading, crosswords, or write letters back home.
Don’t forget the holiday romance, but don’t let it dictate your travels.
Sometimes, you just gotta climb that mountain.
