Today’s “Dear Mom and Dad” comes from Jessica. Her Nana passed away 16 years ago, before Jessica caught the travel bug. These days, Jessica and her twin sister, Shannon, travel the world teaching Spanish to travellers.
Dear Nana,
Hello there! I’m writing this open letter to you: my grandmother, Carmela. And no, I’m not delusional! I am aware that you haven’t been (physically!) on Earth for 16 years (can’t believe it’s already been that long!). But, since you see everything that goes on, I know I have some explaining to do!
I do some crazy things in the name of travel. Some things that you may be surprised about. I party until the sun goes up. A lot! When I’m with a big group of fun locals and fellow travelers, I feel ALIVE. And not tired at all! Until about 6am the next day. Then I sleep. A lot.
You’ve seen that I’ve quit two 9-5, decent-paying jobs to travel for several months. Working a traditional, 9-5 job just isn’t for me. I know, I know. When I was young, I told you that I wanted to be a teacher, but now I realize that traveling still has a lot to teach me. And I’m always ready to learn more!
I know my taste buds have changed! When I was young, I only ate pasta with butter and french fries (super healthy, right?). No matter how much you and mom tried to expand my palate, I refused vegetables, fruits, meats, etc! Now I eat EVERYTHING. You’ve seen me eat pastel de choclo in Chile, endless tapas in Madrid and even grillos (crickets) in Oaxaca, Mexico!
The cool thing about my experiences abroad is that I feel closer to you. When I’m staring out into the ocean on Isla Negra or relaxing in the Retiro Park in Madrid, I feel more spiritual. I feel more connected to you. When I’m away from my family and friends at home, I know that you’re always there.
And thank you. Thank you for always keeping me safe. I know that you’re always looking out for me, and that you protect me from me harm. I love you, guardian angel.
Are you ready for our next adventure together?!
Love,
Your granddaughter, Jessica
