five exciting and underrated locations in New Zealand
From the top of Cape Reinga to the bottom of Slope Point, there’s so much packed inside this tiny country. Most people travel for a few weeks, but even three weeks doesn’t seem like enough time to see everything! If you’ve been once before or looking to get off the beaten track, maybe it’s time to visit these underrated locations in New Zealand.
1. Fox Village
This blog points out that New Zealand is one of the most remote countries, but that doesn’t stop them suggesting some of the quietest places you can visit in the country. Top of the list is Fox Village, the town that’s home to the beautiful mirror lake and Fox glacier – both sights that’ll take your breath away. You can even take a helicopter ride to the top of the glacier. Although pricey, it’s an experience you won’t forget as it takes in some of New Zealand’s most spectacular natural surroundings.
2. East Cape
Ruggedly beautiful, just 1% of tourists make it as far as the East Cape Lighthouse. For those who make the trip, you’ll get the beautiful beaches to yourself and enjoy a slower pace of life. It’s the place to go to relax without any crowds. The journey here is a scenic one too, although you’ll need a car or to arrange transport.
3. The Marlborough region
Sitting at the topmost point of the South Island, you could entirely miss the Marlborough region if you’re not careful. The inviting coastline and countless bays aren’t to be missed. As Audley Travel writes, the area is home to fine wines, quality hikes, and a network of navigable waterways. It’s somewhere focused on the finer things in life.

New Zealand’s national animal, the Kiwi, is something many people want to see when they visit. To see these and many other rare native birds, in their natural habitat, head to Stewart Island. For those who are happy to travel a short distance beyond the mainland, a place of amazing wildlife and scenery awaits. A huge majority of Stewart Island is national park, so you’ll be pleased to know the wild beauty you see is protected.
5. Chatham Islands
If you’re willing to travel even further, what about the Chatham Islands? Although it’s a two-hour flight from the South Island, it’s an interesting place to visit. Powered by wind electricity, the rural sightseeing opportunities are vast. Visit nature preserves or spot some of the sights of historical interest, including Moriori settlement sites. It’s almost like you step back in time here.
